Recording Content:
The recording is a continuation of a formal interview with David Zelikovich Furman. (Part 2 of 2. See MDV 348) He talks about his return to Berdychiv after the war. The conversation then moves to childhood memories, and he talks about Yiddish culture in Berdychiv before the war. He discusses the Great Famine. The interview concludes with Furman singing a couple of Yiddish songs.
The team then conducts another formal interview with David Isakovich Soyfer, who was born in 1930 (see also MDV 356). Soyfer discusses Jewish life in Berdychiv before the war, as well as religious life before and after the war. He explains that in his grandmother’s village, non-Jews spoke Yiddish. Non-Jews joined Jewish dinners. He explains that children were not allowed to go to synagogue after the war. The conversation then turns to Jewish food customs, before Soyfer talks about his experience as a Jew in the Red Army. The tape concludes with a discussion about the relationship between Jews and non-Jews after the war.
